Athletics announce 2 big roster moves ahead of White Sox clash

The Athletics made significant adjustments ahead of Saturday’s matchup with the Chicago White Sox, as pitching depth quickly became a priority early in the three-game series. After a 9–2 loss in the series opener Friday night, the club moved to reinforce its bullpen, recalling Mason Barnett while optioning Elvis Alvarado.

The A’s enter Saturday looking to bounce back from a 9–2 loss to the White Sox at Sutter Health Park. The defeat dropped them to 10–10 on the season and exposed early pitching concerns, particularly after the bullpen absorbed a heavy workload.

With Game 2 approaching, the Athletics focused their roster moves on adding a fresh arm capable of providing length. After a taxing outing in the series opener, the bullpen needed coverage, and Barnett’s arrival gives the staff another multi-inning option.

One of the organization’s top pitching prospects, Barnett earned the call after a strong start at Triple-A Las Vegas. Through three appearances, he posted a 3.07 ERA while showing improved command and an ability to miss bats, making him a logical choice for the promotion.

The Athletics officially announced the move through their communications team on X, formerly Twitter, which shared the news prior to the second game of the series.

“The A’s have recalled RHP Mason Barnett from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned RHP Elvis Alvarado to Las Vegas.”

The right-hander now provides the club with additional flexibility against the White Sox, particularly if the bullpen needs to cover multiple innings again. His ability to handle length could prove especially valuable in a series that already tested the staff in Game 1.

Alvarado’s demotion followed a difficult outing in the opener. He threw roughly 45 pitches and allowed multiple runs, leaving him unavailable for immediate use and making the move a practical one for the club.

The decision also reflects the A’s broader development strategy. The team continues to cycle young arms through the roster to preserve depth, manage workloads, and evaluate longer-term roles as the season unfolds.
