Astros looking for bizarre franchise first against struggling Reds
It’s been a rough start in South Texas, as the Houston Astros lost another series and are now 15-23. Now, they will head to Great American Ballpark to face the Cincinnati Reds. The Astros franchise will be looking for a crazy first in their series this weekend with the Cincinnati Reds, according to Astros beat writer Brian McTaggart.
“The Astros have yet to win in Cincinnati as a member of the AL. They were swept in Cincinnati in 2019 and 2024,” McTaggart wrote on X.
Things got worse for the Astros as they lost Carlos Correa to a season-ending injury. So far, they are 6-6 in May, indicating a stabilization of the early-season struggles. Yet, Houston remains last in the AL West. Their season derailed in April when they endured an eight-game losing streak, including a sweep at the hands of the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
The Astros’ pitching has been bad throughout the first few weeks of the season, as they have dealt with injuries and struggles. Currently, they are 30th in team ERA, indicating how much of a struggle it’s been on the mound this season. The plan for the series opener is to send Mike Burrows to the mound. He is currently 1-4 with a 5.97 ERA. Spencer Arrighetti has been the lone bright spot on the mound, with a record of 4-0 with a 1.96 ERA. He gives Houston the best chance to win on Saturday. Finally, the Astros conclude the set with Cody Bolton, who is 0-1 with a 4.63 ERA.
The Astros will search for their first win at Great American Ballpark since joining the AL. While they have not had much success lately in Cincinnati, they have a great chance to rectify that this weekend.
