  • Liverpool to win The Reds know that victory on Friday would guarantee their place in next season’s Champions League, while Villa will head into the game their minds focused on next week’s Europa League final, and are not expected to play their full strength team
  • Both teams to score Despite their attention being elsewhere, some of Villa have still won five of their last six home games and have scored 17 goals in their last six matches
  • Cody Gakpo to score or assist The Dutchman will likely play an important role for the Reds on Friday with only Dominik Szoboszlai having scored more goals of the players expected to start this season, his goal at Old Trafford a fortnight ago his 15th goal contribution of the campaign
  • Virgil van Dijk to have a shot on target The Liverpool defender has put an effort on goal on 14 occasions in his last 14 Premier League outings

Liverpool make the trip to Villa Park on Friday night as favourites for victory despite having won only three of their last nine matches in all competitions, including picking up just one point from their last two matches.

Arne Slot’s side currently sit fourth in the Premier League table, with goal difference keeping them ahead of their opponents for this weekend, who have no doubt have their mind on their Europa League final against Freiburg in Istanbul next Wednesday night.

Victory for the defending champions on Friday night would guarantee their place in next season’s Champions League, consolation for what has been a disappointing season by the sky high standards that were set last season.

The Reds have struggled on their travels in recent weeks, with their 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford a fortnight ago their fifth defeat in their last six matches away from home.

Aston Villa prepare for their final home game of the season not in the finest of form domestically, but that can no doubt be put down to their prioritising of the Europa League in recent weeks.

Wednesday night will see Unai Emery, the competition’s most successful manager with four trophies, lead his team to Istanbul with the Villans just 90 minutes away from a first major trophy since 1996, and a first piece of major European silverware since 1982.

More than half an eye will be on that Europa League final when it comes to Friday night’s team selection, a large reason that they head into the clash with Liverpool as underdogs, despite having won five of their last six home games in all competitions.

The West Midlands side have won only one of their last five matches in all competitions following their 2-2 draw at an already relegated Burnley side last weekend, which came three days after their 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the second leg of their Europa League semi final.

Aston Villa’s memorable 7-2 victory over the Reds back in 2020 was the last time the Villans got the better over Liverpool in a competitive fixture, a run now stretching to 11 matches, and including eight defeats for the West Midlands side.
