Lionel Scaloni’s side have made life difficult for themselves in the knockout rounds, struggling to get past Cape Verde and Egypt. Switzerland are the highest-ranked nation they will have faced and La Albiceleste will have to up their game to reach the last four.

So with doubts caused by Argentina’s recent performance in the knockouts, I’m swerving the match outcome market and looking at a bet builder. I’ve put together a three-leg wager at odds of 10/1 that has great potential to pay out no matter who wins the tie.

Argentina vs Switzerland Match Details

  • Date: Sunday July 12, 2026
  • Kick-off: 2am BST
  • Venue: Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri, USA
  • Competition: FIFA World Cup Quarter-final
  • TV channel: ITV1 and ITVX

Our 10/1 Bet Builder: Both teams to score, Lionel Messi to score anytime, Granit Xhaka to be shown a card

All three legs of this bet builder perfectly suit this match and can still pay out no matter who wins and how the outcome of the tie is decided.

Argentina have shown themselves to be vulnerable and have conceded poor goals in the knockout stages. They have also relied on Lionel Messi to get them out of trouble on more than one occasion.

The midfield battle is likely to be intense. That only increases the chance of Granit Xhaka – a guy who doesn’t go down without a fight – picking up a card.

Argentina vs Switzerland Bet Builder Breakdown

Both teams to score

Why: Argentina have scored 14 goals in five World Cup matches. If they go into an early lead it will open the game up forcing the Swiss to go in search of goals.

Stat: Argentina have conceded in their last three matches against Jordan, Cape Verde and Egypt. Switzerland are higher ranked than all three of those nations and will also be more effective from set pieces.

Lionel Messi to score anytime

Why: Lionel Messi is Argentina’s talisman and their most reliable source of goals. Despite his second penalty miss of the 2026 World Cup in the 3-2 win over Egypt, he is still likely to be in charge of penalties and it’s unlikely he will keep on missing.

Stat: Messi has already scored eight goals in the competition, he is averaging a goal every 51 minutes and has a shot conversion rate of 27.6 percent.

Granit Xhaka to be shown a card

Why: Xhaka will have his work cut out against an experienced Argentina midfield that includes Alexis Mac Allister and Enzo Fernandez.

Stat: Argentina have had the majority of the possession in both their knockout matches and that trend is set to continue. Xhaka has picked up two cards in his last three matches and the world champions will put the referee under pressure whenever he mistimes a tackle.

Stats that matter for your bet

  • Both teams to score: Argentina have scored in every match at the World Cup and conceded in their last three against lower ranked opposition.
  • Lionel Messi to score anytime: Messi has scored in all five of his matches at the World Cup and will be in charge of dead ball situations.
  • Granit Xhaka to be shown a card: As well as picking up two yellow cards in his last three matches at the World Cup, Xhaka also received three cards in his last five Premier League matches last season.
  • Additional information: Switzerland have never beaten Argentina in seven attempts and are attempting to reach the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in history.

Why we are backing this bet builder

This bet builder is very good value given that Argentina have struggled in their two knockout games and there are now doubts about their ability to successfully defend their World Cup title.

Switzerland are by far the toughest test that La Albiceleste have faced yet. They are similar to Cape Verde in that they are extremely well organised, and this means it could take more Messi magic to make the breakthrough.

The Swiss will have no option but to go on the front foot if Argentina score, and the defending champions looked very vulnerable on the counter attack against Egypt, something that Swiss head coach Murat Yakin won’t have failed to recognise.

Granit Xhaka is a good candidate to pick up a booking. If the match is tight, it should be a fiercely competitive midfield battle. Argentina look far stronger in this area of the pitch, and that should increase the pressure and workload on the Sunderland midfielder.

If the match opens up, Xhaka could be exposed by the transition, again making him a good prospect to be booked. Finally, Xhaka is the sort of guy to sacrifice himself and won’t hesitate to commit a tactical foul for his team.

Argentina vs Switzerland odds

Argentina are 7/10 favourites to win the match in 90 minutes. They seem to be longer odds than I would have expected, and this is surely down to their struggles in the previous two rounds.

The draw is 12/5 and Switzerland are 9/2 to win. If Murat Yakin’s side can frustrate Argentina in the same way they did Colombia, those odds could be quite tempting. Although a wager on Switzerland to qualify for the semi-final may represent better value at 5/2.

Argentina are just 1/3 to book their place in a second successive semi-final by any method.

Argentina vs Switzerland match prediction and line-ups

Switzerland will present Argentina with a completely different set of problems to what Egypt did. The Swiss are a better organised team, meaning Argentina’s match with Cape Verde is more likely to be the blueprint for this game.

Like he did against Cape Verde, Lionel Messi is Argentina’s best chance of making the breakthrough. However, Switzerland will have a gameplan in mind for if they go behind, and given they are a step up in class from the other teams Argentina have so far faced, we can see them finding a way to take this match into extra-time and maybe even all the way to penalties.

Prediction: Argentina 1-1 Switzerland

  • Lionel Messi to score
  • Match to be decided on penalties

Argentina predictions: The defending champions have no reported injury concerns and should line up in their familiar 4-4-2 formation.

The main decision Lionel Scaloni has to make is which of Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez leads the line alongside Messi. Alvarez started in the win over Egypt, but that could change.

The decision could also come down to who Scaloni feels can influence the game late on. Squad depth is going to be key at this stage of the competition, and it’s an area that Argentina don’t lack in.

  • Predicted XI: Emi Martinez; Molina, Romero, Lisandro Martinez, Medina; Paredes, De Paul, Mac Allister, Enzo Fernandez; Alvarez, Messi.

Switzerland predictions: The Swiss do have injury concerns which could hamper their chances of reaching a first-ever World Cup semi-final.

Johan Manzambi missed the Round of 16 win over Colombia and the potentially Premier League-bound midfielder is struggling to be fit to face Argentina. Michel Aebischer and Luca Jaquez are also both struggling and look likely to miss out.

No matter who starts, Yakin is likely to stick with his 4-3-3 system that will often seem more like a 4-5-1 when the Swiss are out of possession.

  • Predicted XI: Kobel; Zakaria, Akanji, Elvedi, Rodríguez; Jashari, Freuler, Xhaka; Ndoye, Rieder, Embolo.
