Anthony Richardson reports to camp with no end to Colts tenure in sight

With the Indianapolis Colts assessing their team after the 2026 NFL Draft, the one aspect of the team that remains a mystery is quarterback Anthony Richardson. As the Colts have allowed Richardson to pursue a trade after making a request, it does not appear that anything has materialized with the latest news on the 23-year-old.

According to Stephen Holder of ESPN, Richardson has “reported” for voluntary offseason workouts on Monday, as this comes after he didn’t participate in them in the prior two weeks. As Holder also mentions, there does not appear to be a trade that is available for Indianapolis to make that would send Richardson elsewhere.

Plus, there is “no indication” that the team will waive Richardson.

“Colts QB Anthony Richardson reported today for voluntary offseason workouts after staying home the past two weeks, per source. With the Colts seemingly no closer to trading him, as he requested, and with no indication they’ll release him, he’s back for the time being. Stay tuned,” Holder wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

The latest on the Colts and Anthony Richardson

When it comes to recent news around the Colts and Richardson, the team is not exercising the quarterback’s fifth-year team option, per ESPN, which means he will be an unrestricted free agent after next season. If they picked it up, it would cost Indianapolis, giving Richardson a guaranteed salary of $22 million.

The relationship between Richardson and the Colts has been a weird one after the team picked him with the fourth overall pick out of the University of Florida in the 2023 NFL Draft. Richardson has had an up-and-down NFL career thus far, showing flashes, but also showing downsides.

With Daniel Jone the starting quarterback, Richardson is looking for a new spot, though coming to voluntary workouts is an interesting development. It does seem that if a trade won’t materialize, the Colts are good with having him as a backup option, as general manager Chris Ballard said in March that keeping him is “definitely a scenario.”

It remains to be seen how Richardson’s tenure with the team progresses ahead of the 2026 season.
