Angels’ Kurt Suzuki gets 100% real on catcher’s 5-hit breakout performance vs. Dodgers
The Los Angeles Angels defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers by a final score of 13-5 on Sunday. It was a good victory for an Angels ball club that has been struggling. Catcher Sebastian Rivero — who was batting last in the lineup — led the way with five hits and six RBIs. Angels manager Kurt Suzuki commented on Rivero’s performance after the game, via MLB.com.
“Yeah, he was feeling it, man. Six RBIs, five hits, I know he’s been working with the hitting guys a lot in the cage the past couple weeks about some mechanical things,” Suzuki said. “It’s really nice when you work at stuff and you see the results on the field. It’s awesome.”
Rivero, 27, is now hitting .220/.264/.260 across 23 games played this season. His numbers do not jump off the page, but he certainly played a crucial role against the Dodgers on Sunday.
The Angels avoided a sweep as well, as the Dodgers won the first two games of the series. Dodgers starter Emmet Sheehan was removed in the second inning after the Angels made him work especially hard on Sunday afternoon.
While it was a good victory, the Angels are still just 25-41 overall — which is the worst record in the American League. Perhaps the win will provide the ball club with a necessary boost of momentum.
They will look to continue playing well on Monday night in the first contest of a three-game series against the Houston Astros. First pitch on Monday is scheduled for 9:38 PM EST in Anaheim.
