Alexander Zverev outlasts Flavio Cobolli for long-awaited first major at French Open
For almost a half-decade now, the moniker has followed Alexander Zverev: the best player in the history of tennis to never win a major title. Now, the monkey is finally off of his back.
Zverev survived a heap of nerves and a very game Flavio Cobolli in the Roland Garros men’s final on Sunday, collecting an elusive Grand Slam trophy with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 victory. The World No. 3 started the match on fire before battling some nerves and physical issues in the middle of the match, eventually escaping with the win after a dominant fifth set.
The German collects his first major in his fourth final, including his second appearance in the Roland Garros showpiece after losing to Carlos Alcaraz in 2024
