Alex Scott launches new career months after Football Focus cancelled

Alex Scott has launched a new women’s football show following the cancellation of Football Focus.

The long-running BBC show came to an end in May after 52 years on air.

Scott had served as presenter since 2021 but is now fronting her own show, produced by a company she founded earlier this year.

The 41-year-old has revealed she launched her own production firm in May called First Cap Productions.

One More Word: The WSL has now released its first episode with a live studio audience alongside guests Anita Asante and Fara Williams.

Scott presents the YouTube show, which she unveiled in a statement shared to social media.

Writing on Instagram, the former England international revealed she had started her own production company.

She explained: “Four months ago, I quietly set up First Cap Productions.

“No big announcement, no funding, no team round a table, just an idea, built on something I’ve always believed: Stepping into your own power for the first time.

“Your first cap. Your first opportunity. Your first time finding your voice and being brave enough to use it. That’s where First Cap came from.”

As for the company’s debut show, Scott added: “For the last four months I’ve been building a new show in the background, something I can’t wait to share more information on with you soon.

“Then this past week I watched the women’s football community explode with opinions, frustration, ideas and passion and I thought: this is exactly why I started First Cap. Because sometimes you don’t need permission, you just need to say ‘right, let’s do it.’ So we did.

“One More Word WSL went from an idea to a real show. No funding, no big budget, no fancy studio, just people from the women’s football community who believed in it: building the set, bringing the equipment, sharing ideas, showing up, saying ‘I’m in,’ and I can’t thank you all enough.”

The new Women’s Super League season got underway this past weekend, with London City Lionesses beating Manchester United in the opening fixture.

One More Word: The WSL subsequently released its first episode to YouTube on Monday night.

Scott continued: “It was stressful, and it wasn’t perfect but the women’s game was never built on perfection.

“It’s built by people who keep showing up, try, fail, and make it better together.

“That’s what I want First Cap to be: a place to create our own things, tell our own stories, have the conversations we want to have, disagree, challenge each other, celebrate each other, and find our voice.”

As a player, Scott won 140 caps for the Lionesses, scoring 12 goals from right-back.

Her career also included three spells at Arsenal along with stints at Birmingham City and Boston Breakers.

During her time with the Gunners, Scott won 22 trophies including six league titles and the Women’s Champions League.

Since retiring, she has moved into punditry and presenting, with five years spent as host of Football Focus.
