Alex Bregman drops truth bomb on Cubs’ wildly inconsistent season

Alex Bregman was critically honest about the ups and downs of the Chicago Cubs‘ strange start to the 2026 MLB season.

The Cubs boasted two 10-game winning streaks, showing their ceiling as a playoff contender in the National League. However, they suffered a 10-game losing streak that had them go down in the conference standings.

Chicago was preparing for Game 2 of its series against the St. Louis Cardinals when Bregman spoke with reporter Ken Rosenthal. It was there where he reflected on the roller coaster of his team’s season so far.

“Well, I think obviously the 10-game winning streaks show the potential of this team, and I think the 10-game losing streak shows that when you don’t execute against the best players in the world, you’re going to lose games. So I feel like when this team is executing and playing good baseball, it’s special, and that was illustrated by those 2 10-game winning streaks, and I think the guys in here are determined to execute at a high level on a daily basis, and know that if we don’t, it’s tough to win in this league,” Bregman said.

Alex Bregman and the Cubs hope to get back on a consistent winning rhythm, which they may have started by beating the Cardinals 6-1.

The game began scoreless after three innings until St. Louis scored its lone run in the fourth frame. It was all Chicago from there as they reached home plate six times in the fifth, sixth, eighth, and ninth innings.

Chicago improved to a 32-27 record on the season, holding the second spot in the NL Central Division standings. They are above the Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates while trailing the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Cubs look forward to their series finale against the Cardinals, seeking the series win. Game 3 commences on May 31 at 7:20 p.m. ET.
