Alabama beats FSU for talented RB in big recruitment win

Alabama has not been getting a lot of wins on the College Football Recruiting trail. Despite not getting a ton of recruits so far for the Class of 2027, the team has landed some solid players, such as running back Nigel Newkirk committing to Alabama.

Now, Alabama has added another running back to the Class of 2027, according to Hayes Fawcett of Rivals.

Tai Phillips, a three-star running back, has committed to the Crimson Tide, choosing Alabama over Florida State and Stanford. Phillips explained why he chose Alabama over other schools, according to Brett Greenberg of 247Sports.

“Facility wise, I can speak on that like everyone else,” he explained then. “It’s Alabama, so it has state-of-the-art facilities. Everything is great. Not even just the football aspect, everything about ‘Bama. Everybody is really close and knows each other. Nobody is just a random number on the board. It’s a family atmosphere there. A lot of people take the relationships seriously and that is a big thing for me.”

The primary recruiter for Phillips was Robert Gillespie, who is the assistant head coach and running backs coach for Alabama. The relationship between Gillespie and the other coaches with Phillips made a major impact on the decision.

“Our relationship was really good during the start and especially now,” Phillips said. “Something that really sticks out to me is that he is more of a father to me. He is a really great mentor, to be honest. He is not one to just give me the whole recruiting deal and nonsense. The stuff he says, it comes from the heart and he is a really transparent person.”

He is not only excited about Gillespie, but also about head coach Kalen DeBoer.

“I like his mentality going into this season,” Phillips said. “He really thinks that his class can be special. He doesn’t plan to make it too big, but he plans to get the right guys. I like that about him. Just the way he has been carrying himself, he has a really hungry team and he is a really good coach.”

Alabama now has nine commitments for the Class of 2027, including Elijah Haven, the top quarterback in the nation. The Crimson Tide are ranked 46th in the nation currently for the class, and 14th in the SEC.
