A’ja Wilson on impact of Alpha Kappa Alpha on her life

A’ja Wilson is opening up about the deeper influences behind her dominance on and off the court, crediting Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. as a pivotal force in shaping her into the woman and leader she is today. In a recent interview with Vogue, the WNBA superstar reflected on how her sorority experience instilled a sense of purpose, discipline, and sisterhood that extends far beyond basketball.

“I am so grateful for the sisterhood that I formed in college through AKA. It allowed me to be a woman. As I’ve gotten older and become a leader, I have to credit AKA and our sisterhood when it comes to that,” she shared.

Wilson joined the Theta Gamma chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. during her time at the University of South Carolina. During the outlet’s popular “In the Bag” segment, she opened up about how her sorority—and her 60 line sisters—became a safe space throughout her college years. She also noted that joining the organization allowed her to break out of the rigid routine that often comes with being a student-athlete.

“It allowed me to be a young girl. Because as a student-athlete, you become trapped in this world of gym, class, gym, class—and that was it,” she added.

What sets Divine Nine organizations apart is the lifelong commitment to service, sisterhood, and community that extends well beyond undergraduate years. Even nearly a decade after crossing, Wilson’s connection to her sorority remains strong. Last year, she paid homage in a major way—debuting her signature Nike A’One in Alpha Kappa Alpha’s iconic pink and green colorway. While many of her sorors hoped to get their hands on a pair, the exclusive release only added to the moment’s significance.
