Raiders’ Klint Kubiak fully absolves Fernando Mendoza of blame for opening-drive INT vs. 49ers

The preseason is over, and Fernando Mendoza had plenty of in-game action in the Las Vegas Raiders’ finale against the San Francisco 49ers. One of the lowlights was a series-opening interception. Coach Klint Kubiak fully absolved his new quarterback of the opening-drive interception, according to Raiders beat writer Ryan McFadden.

The pass tipped off the top of Jalen Nailor’s hands and into the air. From there, linebacker Tatum Bethune picked it off and took it the other way. Ultimately, it was not the best way to start a drive.

Kubiak gave his honest review of Mendoza and what he could possibly work on. Significantly, he finished 7 of 14 with 57 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception. Mendoza also took two sacks. Comparatively, Kirk Cousins went 8 of 11 with 51 yards while taking no sacks. Mendoza and Cousins have worked hand-in-hand this offseason. Yet, one of them will be the starter, though the Raiders have not made a decision.

Some believe Mendoza should start in Week 1 and get the reps early in his career. So far, his performance has been uneven. Mendoza went 8 for 15 last week against the Houston Texans while passing for 86 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Before that, he went 10 for 16 with 97 yards and a touchdown.

Mendoza will have a week and a half to prep if the Raiders name him the starter. If the team chooses Cousins, he will have some time to work on his game as the season ramps up. Regardless of what happens, Mendoza will have a chance to make his mark, especially after the Raiders spent the top pick of the NFL Draft on him.
