How long is each F1 driver under contract?

Every Formula 1 season, the driver transfer market ranks among the biggest races of the year.

However, that market seems to be slowing down as summer gives way to autumn. In the days leading up to the Italian Grand Prix, every announcement that has come from a team in this regard has been an extension of a driver’s contract.

Could that change in the weeks ahead? Time will tell.

As of now, here is the status of each driver’s contract, and when their current deal is set to expire.

Each team is listed in alphabetical order, as is each driver within each team.

Alpine

As of Thursday, August 27, Alpine’s lineup is set for the 2027 F1 season.

Franco Colapinto — 2027

Alpine confirmed on August 27 that Franco Colapinto will be back with the team next season, as the two sides agreed on a new one-year deal. While Colapinto did not score a point after replacing Jack Doohan early in the 2025 campaign, as Alpine chose to focus on the incoming regulation set, Colapinto had 19 points in his account at the time the new deal was announced, including a P6 at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Pierre Gasly — 2028

Alpine and Pierre Gasly announced a new contract last fall, one that will keep him with the team through at least 2028.

Gasly has been impressive this season, scoring during all but three race weekends. His results include a podium finish — albeit one that remains in litigation — at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Aston Martin

Aston Martin got off to a very slow start this year, as the team endured struggles with the new Honda power unit.

Will that bleed into their lineup decisions for next season?

Fernando Alonso — 2026

This season marks the final year of the multi-season deal Fernando Alonso signed in 2024. The two-time Drivers’ Champion has hinted at retirement before, but it remains to be seen whether he will ride off into the sunset at the end of this season.

Lance Stroll — 2026

While F1 driver contracts remain something of a mystery box, Lance Stroll’s contract is more mysterious than all the others. He put pen to paper on a new contract for “2025 and beyond” during the 2024 campaign, but with his father Lawrence Stroll in charge, it is believed that the seat is his as long as he wants it.

Audi

Audi’s debut season has delivered mixed results, and that includes their lineup for 2027.

Gabriel Bortoleto — 2026

Young Gabriel Bortoleto has impressed in recent weeks, including a pair of P8 finishes at the British Grand Prix and then the Belgian Grand Prix. While his contract is set to expire at the end of the season, it is likely that Audi will look to retain him for 2027.

Nico Hülkenberg — 2026

Veteran Nico Hülkenberg took longer to break through into the points than Bortoleto this season, but has finished in the top ten in each of the last two races. He scored his first points of the season with a P9 at the Hungarian Grand Prix, and followed that with a P8 during the Dutch Grand Prix.

At 38 he is one of the veterans on the grid, but has likely done enough to earn another year at Audi.

Cadillac

Cadillac’s first season on the grid has already seen one major change, as the team replaced team principal Graeme Lowdon with Marcin Budkowski during the annual summer shutdown.

However, at the moment it seems their lineup is set for at least next season.

Valtteri Bottas — 2027

According to multiple reports, Cadillac inked Valtteri Bottas to a multi-year deal that will keep him with the team through the 2027 campaign.

Sergio Pérez — 2027

Similar to Bottas, Sergio Pérez reportedly signed a multi-year deal when he joined Cadillac, one that will keep him with the American-based operation through next season.

Ferrari

Ferrari’s driver lineup is set through at least next season, although that could change depending on what one of their drivers decides to do regarding his own future.

Charles Leclerc — 2028

Ferrari and Charles Leclerc announced a new “multi-year” deal back in June of this year, one that is described as keeping him in red for “the coming seasons.” That likely keeps Leclerc with Ferrari through 2028, and that could be longer if the contract includes team or driver options.

Lewis Hamilton — 2027

When Lewis Hamilton announced his sport-shattering move to Ferrari, his contract was for a “multi-year” deal, and speaking ahead of the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix the driver confirmed that the contract keeps him with Ferrari for at least next season.

Several outlets, including Sky Sports F1, believe Hamilton has a driver option with the team for 2028 as well.

Haas

The biggest intrigue right now on the grid regarding the driver transfer market likely rests at Haas.

Oliver Bearman — 2026

Oliver Bearman signed with Haas on a “multi-year” deal that runs through 2026, and team principal Ayao Komatsu confirmed that there is a team option to keep him at Haas for next season. However, Bearman is a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, and has been linked with a potential move to the Scuderia in the future.

All available reporting points to Haas retaining Bearman for next season, as he leaves the Dutch Grand Prix sitting 13th in the Drivers’ Championship standings with 18 points, 15 points ahead of teammate Esteban Ocon.

Esteban Ocon — 2026

As for Esteban Ocon, he might be the driver most under pressure to retain his seat as the 2026 season enters the second half of the schedule.

Ocon has been outscored 18-3 by Bearman as of the Dutch Grand Prix, and the British driver has out-qualified him in 8-of-12 races this season.

Speaking ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, Komatsu indicated the team was “not in any rush” to confirm the 2027 lineup.

“We’re not in any rush,” began Komatsu. “We’re focused on our two drivers, Ollie and Esteban, trying to get the best out of them. They’ve got the tough challenge, right? You know what they’re capable of. You know, Ollie has shown it repeatedly. Esteban, when he is happy with the car, you know what he can do.

“So we need to really just focus on providing them with the best possible car, best set-up adaptation, and get the best out of them. And then both of our drivers are fully focused.”

McLaren

In contrast with Haas, things are rather stable at McLaren, as the defending Constructors’ Champions have their lineup set for the next few seasons.

Lando Norris — 2027

The 2025 F1 Drivers’ Champion inked a new “multi-year” deal with the team ahead of the 2024 season, one that is expected to keep him in Woking through 2027. However, reporting from various outlets in August indicates that the driver and the team are working on a potential extension that would see him stay with McLaren for several more years.

Oscar Piastri — 2028

The Australian driver signed a new deal of his own ahead of the 2025 season, a “multi-year” contract that will keep him in Papaya through 2028.

Mercedes

When Mercedes announced that George Russell and Kimi Antonelli would be back for 2026, the team only confirmed that both drivers would be in Brackley through 2026.

However, multiple outlets have confirmed that Russell and Antonelli signed “multi-year” deals that will keep them with Mercedes through 2027.

Kimi Antonelli — 2027

The young Italian driver has turned into a championship challenger in just his second season, putting pressure on his veteran teammate at the sharp end of the grid. He agreed to a new deal with Mercedes last season, one that is reported to keep him with the team through 2027.

George Russell — 2027

Speaking with the media, including SB Nation, ahead of the 2025 United States Grand Prix, George Russell indicated Mercedes was where he would find his best chance to win a championship. Can he deliver on that potential in the second half of the 2026 season?

Red Bull

Red Bull put to rest one of the biggest questions facing the driver transfer market in August.

That is when the team announced a new deal for Max Verstappen, one that will keep him with the team through 2030. While the exact details are unknown, several sources put the contract figure in the neighborhood of $110 million per year, when bonuses are taken into account.

Isack Hadjar — 2026

Isack Hadjar signed a one-year deal with Red Bull ahead of the 2026 season. However, the pace he has shown this year likely leads to an extension of that contract before the season is over.

Max Verstappen — 2030

As noted above, Max Verstappen signed a new deal in August that will keep him in Milton Keynes through the 2030 season.

Visa Cash App Racing Bulls

Red Bull’s junior team has cycled through several drivers in recent years, as the organization worked to find the best running mate for Max Verstappen. But with some stability coming to Red Bull, that may also bleed over to VCARB.

Liam Lawson — 2026

Liam Lawson began the 2025 season at Red Bull alongside Verstappen, as the team parted ways with Sergio Pérez following the 2024 campaign. But the experiment lasted just a handful of races, as Lawson returned to VCARB in a swap with Yuki Tsunoda.

But he has shown improved form this season, and even earned a relief spot alongside Verstappen at the Dutch Grand Prix following an injury to Isack Hadjar. He is under contract through 2026, but the team will likely bring him back for one more year, ahead of the anticipated arrival of F2 phenom Nikola Tsolov.

Arvid Lindblad — 2026

Rookie Arvid Lindblad got up to speed rather quickly in F1, scoring points in just his first race on the grid with a P8 in the Australian Grand Prix. He has 23 points on the season following the Dutch Grand Prix, and while his contract was for 2026, his consistency has likely been enough to earn a second year on the grid.

Williams

Williams conducted quite a bit of business over the summer break, solidifying their lineup for 2027.

Alexander Albon — 2027

Williams announced a new contract for Alexander Albon ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, one that will keep him with the team through 2027. That will mark his sixth campaign with Williams.

Carlos Sainz — 2028

When Lewis Hamilton announced his move to Ferrari, the decision made Carlos Sainz the biggest free agent on the F1 grid. Williams won the race for his services, inking him to a “multi-year” deal through 2026. But following the announcement of Albon’s new deal, Williams then confirmed a new deal for Sainz, one that will keep him with Williams through 2028.
