49ers TE George Kittle’s miraculous recovery gets insider ‘worst case’ that fans will love

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle has received an encouraging update in his recovery from a torn right Achilles, giving him a realistic chance to return for the 2026 season opener against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported Thursday that Kittle visited renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on Wednesday. ElAttrache performed the surgery after Kittle suffered the injury during San Francisco’s Jan. 11 wild-card playoff win over the Philadelphia Eagles. The visit was encouraging and Kittle’s rehabilitation is ahead of schedule, according to Schefter.

As encouraging as the prospect of a Week 1 return already is for the 49ers, The Athletic’s Vic Tafur offered an equally more positive outlook, reporting that if Kittle does miss the opener, his return could come just a week later.

“It seems like the worst-case scenario for George Kittle’s first game back is Week 2, and that’s pretty good,” Tafur wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Kittle underwent surgery three days after suffering the Achilles tear and has remained on the active/physically unable to perform list during training camp. He has not participated in practice, but he has continued his rehabilitation and has progressed to running and conditioning work. Kittle recently expressed confidence that he would not remain on the PUP list when the regular season begins.

San Francisco must remove Kittle from the PUP list by Aug. 30 for him to be eligible to play at the beginning of the season. The team will also have to weigh his recovery carefully, particularly with the opener scheduled for Sept. 10 at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Kittle’s potential return would be massive for the 49ers. Though he appeared in only 11 regular-season games in 2025 because of hamstring and ankle injuries, the 32-year-old recorded 57 catches on 69 targets for 628 yards and seven touchdowns. He also earned his seventh career Pro Bowl selection.

Kittle has spent his entire nine-year NFL career with San Francisco after being selected in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Across 124 games, he has garnered 595 receptions, 8,008 receiving yards and 52 touchdowns. He is also a two-time first-team All-Pro.

A Week 1 return would come only about eight months after his Achilles surgery, making the latest medical update all the more promising for the 49ers.
