Astros’ Joe Espada provides huge Jeremy Pena injury update

Houston Astros star Jeremy Pena recently suffered an injury scare. Astros manager Joe Espada provided an important update on Pena’s injury status on Thursday, via Chandler Rome of The Athletic.

“Jeremy Peña underwent an MRI today that showed no structural damage in his right hand. Peña is still quite sore, but Joe Espada said the team is optimistic he won’t need an IL stint,” Rome reported.

The fact that Pena likely won’t need an injured list stint is obviously of the utmost importance. The stretch run of the season is right around the corner and the last thing the Astros need is to lose Pena for a significant amount of time. The team is obviously going to be patient with Pena before putting him back in the lineup, but it seems as if he should return soon.

Pena has played a crucial role for the Astros this season. He has been limited to 79 games played due to a previous injury he suffered, but Pena’s impact while on the field has been immense.

The star infielder is currently hitting .283/.338/.469 across 340 plate appearances. He has 14 home runs, 14 doubles and eight stolen bases as well.

The Astros are set to enter their game on Thursday against the Los Angeles Angels with a 64-63 record. That mark does not jump off the page, but it is good for a two-game lead in the American League West standings.

Updates on Jeremy Pena’s injury status will continue to be monitored and provided as they are made available.
