Texas football star Colin Simmons reveals ‘f**k it’ mentality that transformed run defense

Texas Longhorns edge rusher Colin Simmons enters 2026 as one of college football’s premier pass rushers. The junior now wants to become equally disruptive against the run.

Simmons recorded 12 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss last season. His sack total led the Southeastern Conference, while his growth as a run defender made him a more complete presence along the Longhorns’ front.

This development carries added importance as the Longhorns’ football program begins its first season under defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. The veteran coach returned to Austin after directing some of the strongest defenses in program history from 2008 through 2010.

Simmons has embraced a more physical approach during fall camp. His performance has earned preseason All-America recognition and places on several major award watch lists entering his junior year.

On3 Sports’ Evan Vieth shared Simmons’ comments on a graphic Thursday on X, formerly Twitter, after asking the Texas standout about his development against the run and the mindset behind that progress.

“I don’t know. That’s a good question, actually. I don’t know. I just said, ‘F*ck it,’” Simmons said casually. “‘F*ck it, go strike sh*t. Go make a play. Go be you. Go be yourself.’”

The blunt response illustrates how Simmons stopped overthinking his responsibilities. He began trusting his instincts, attacking blockers and using his natural explosiveness to influence more than passing situations.

That approach aligns with the identity Muschamp is installing. During his previous tenure, the Longhorns ranked among the nation’s best in sacks, rush defense, and total defense.

Simmons stands at the center of that effort after leading the conference in sacks as a sophomore. Texas enters 2026 with championship expectations and will rely on him to pressure quarterbacks without sacrificing discipline against the run.

This mindset gives Simmons a clear blueprint for 2026. By pairing his proven pass-rushing production with greater consistency against the run, he can anchor Muschamp’s front and help the Longhorns build the complete defense needed to meet the program’s championship expectations.
