49ers rumors: Why Mac Jones likely won’t be traded before 2026 deadline after $300K bonus
The San Francisco 49ers and Mac Jones are probably going to stay together for just a little while longer.
Although there was speculation that the Niners would draft a quarterback this spring and cash in on some of the value Jones created for himself while filling in for Brock Purdy, the San Francisco Chronicle’s Eric Branch reported today that Jones will probably be sticking around the Bay Area until next offseason after he and the team agreed to a revised contract, which included a $300,000 bonus for being on the roster.
“The 49ers are unlikely to deal Jones before the trade deadline on Nov. 17 after not using one of their eight picks on the position in the draft,” Branch wrote. “Their third-string QB, Kurtis Rourke, is a 2025 seventh-round pick who spent his rookie season on the non-football injury list due to a knee injury he suffered in college.
“Jones is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in March, when he figures to earn a raise that will dwarf his $300,000 thank-you gift.”
Jones, 27, went 15th overall to the New England Patriots in the 2021 draft. Although he earned Pro Bowl honors as a rookie, things only got worse year-over-year for Jones, who went from throwing for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in 2021 to a Year 3 in which he was benched and had 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
After the 2023 season, he was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars, for whom he served as a backup until Trevor Lawrence went down with injury. In 10 games and seven starts with the Jags, Jones improved his completion percentage and passer rating from his final season in New England, and he threw 8 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.
With the 49ers, Jones started eight games a year ago, enjoying career-highs in completion percentage, yards per attempt, and passer rating.
