49ers’ Kyke Juszczyk reveals Kyle Shanahan’s elite’ defensive understanding

The San Francisco 49ers have hopes for many wins in 2026, and it appears there will be plenty of preseason competition for defensive starting spots. And that’s good news for Kyle Shanahan, who drew praise for his elite defensive understanding from runing back Kyle Juszczyk, according to a post on X by the NFL on ESPN.

“I never leave a conversation with Kyle without having learned something,” Juszczyk said. “Or just impressed with how his brain works. He has a different perspective than most.”

In nine seasons as the 49ers’ head coach, Shanahan has a record of 82-67. He’s been to the Super Bowl twice but lost both times.

One big reason for his success, Juszczyk said, is that Shanahan simply knows defense. And that’s how he makes his offense so difficult to defend.

“To be able to sit in the meetings and hear him break down the game,” Juszczyk said. “He will go through and tell you every single assignment of the defense. He’ll use their assignment against them for how we can exploit that and be successful on offense.

“And I think that’s the difference between him and some of the other play callers in this league. He understands the defense just as good, if not better, than most defensive coordinators. And I think that’s how you really take it to that elite level of play calling that I feel he’s at.”

Another thing Shanahan has mastered is the relationship with quarterback Brock Purdy. Shanahan constantly communicates with Purdy during games, helping him overcome obstacles and see the game from a coach’s perspective, according to nbcsportsbayarea.com.

“I’m always impressed or even relieved that during games when Brock comes off the field, him and Kyle are always talking,” Juszczyk said. “They’re always communicating what happened on the previous drive, what are we thinking here going forward. And I just think there’s a direct line of communication. And especially as Brock’s gotten older, he’s a veteran starter now, he’s got a lot of games under his belt. You see, Brock being able to contribute more to that to push back, maybe.”
