49ers’ Ji’Ayir Brown makes eye-popping Super Bowl claim about Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs

After a hard-fought season through one of the toughest divisions in all of sports, the NFC West, the San Francisco 49ers’ Super Bowl showdown against the Kansas City Chiefs quickly took an unfortunate turn when Dre Greenlaw, the team’s weakside linebacker, suffered a game-ending Achilles’ tear.

Despite some early success against Patrick Maomes and company on the defensive side of the ball, in the end, the 49ers weren’t able to slow the Chiefs enough to secure the win, going down 25-22 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Discussing Greenlaw’s impact on the Chiefs on NFL Spotlight, 49ers safety Ji’Ayir Brown broke down what makes Greenlaw so special and what he meant to that particular iteration of San Francisco’s defense.

“Dre Greenlaw, in order to take you guys inside of that, I have to tell you about Dre Greenlaw and who’s back, right?” Brown noted. “He is the spark plug. He was back then in ’23 you know. He’s the spark plug. He’s the engine. He keeps everybody else going. Fred’s the leader, but Dre is the spark plug. He turns the cars on around him. His power, his relentlessness, his attitude is so energetic. He feeds the whole 11, whole 10 behind him with that kind of passion, that kind of energy.”

Turning his attention to the game in question, Brown took things a step further, noting that, if Greenlaw hadn’t gotten injured, the 49ers had the Lombardi in the bag, as they would have shut the 49ers offense down with ease.

“We’re running out there and boom, Dre goes down and we looking like, what happened? When I tell you the sideline felt it  the coaching staff felt it, we felt it as players on a team, out there on defense, we felt his presence gone,” Brown said. “Because if you look back, man, in the first quarter, Dre had like the first six tackles. He was unstoppable, man. He was having a game of his life. And wow, that happens to him, which is so unfortunate. And now we got to play without our engine. We got to play without our spark plug, which we are prepared to do. But it’s just not the same with him on the field, man. Honestly, it drained us, man. I think if Dre Greenwald played that game, they never passed the 50-yard line.”

Is Brown on the money? Would a 49ers team that admittedly finished the regular season ranked eighth in pass defense and third in run defense be able to shut down a player widely considered the best of his generation? Or would the Chiefs have remained as explosive as ever, creating an all-time game between two legacy franchises? Unfortunately, fans will never know.
