49ers’ injuries keep piling up as key lineman goes down
The San Francisco 49ers’ injury woes deepened on Thursday night, this time along the offensive line. During their 41-17 preseason win over the Los Angeles Chargers, the team announced that guard Austen Pleasants was ruled out after going down with a knee injury, adding yet another name to a growing list of banged-up 49ers.
Pleasants was not the only casualty of the evening. Rookie cornerback Renardo Green exited the contest and was ruled questionable to return, and veteran defensive back Jack Jones immediately took over his spot in the lineup. Green did not return to the game.
The blow was especially untimely for the young corner, who was working to bank quality reps before the regular season.
The secondary setback is only part of a larger picture that has San Francisco holding its breath heading into Week 1. The 49ers are still managing the returns of two key defensive linemen from major injuries. Star pass rusher Nick Bosa has been largely sidelined throughout training camp as he recovers from the torn ACL that limited him to just three games in 2025.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has reassured reporters that Bosa’s absence stems from standard tendonitis and joint soreness rather than any reinjury or structural setback, with the team taking a cautious, week-to-week approach.
Fellow lineman Mykel Williams is on a similar path. Williams continues to work back from his own ACL injury, and while Shanahan says he is on the right track, the second-year player is unlikely to suit up for the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams. “He’s further away than those other guys,” Shanahan said. “We do think he’s close.”
There has been encouraging news mixed in. Bosa was reported to be running well during side work, with no support sleeve on his surgically repaired right knee, a positive marker in his rehab. Still, with Pleasants and Green now added to the docket, the 49ers’ depth is being tested well before the games start counting.
The mounting injuries only sharpen the urgency of San Francisco’s unsettled position battles, particularly at left guard, where the team continues searching for a reliable answer as roster cutdowns loom.
