New Zealand Cricket disclosed on August 20, 2026 that its preliminary deficit for the financial year ending July 31, 2026 stands at $7.3m, a figure four times larger than the budgeted shortfall of $1.8m. The announcement triggered an immediate review of internal financial processes and a revised broadcast plan for the Super Smash competition.

Three separate pressures combined to produce the gap. NZC had allocated revenue from a multi-year domestic broadcast deal that had in fact been received and recognised in earlier financial years, creating an accounting mismatch. Income from the organisation's commercial arrangement with Dream11 also fell after amendments to India's gambling regulations altered the terms of that partnership. Sustained cost growth across the organisation compounded both shortfalls.

"As an organisation we accept that this financial performance isn't good enough, nor is it sustainable. It's important that we own this updated budget deficit and immediately put in place the necessary steps to adjust and ensure it doesn't happen again. To be clear, NZC had received all the broadcast revenue it should have, it is not lost income," NZC CEO Geoff Allott said as quoted by NZC.

The $7.3m figure is preliminary. NZC's annual audit, expected to conclude in early November, will incorporate a shift to GAAP-compliant Public Benefit Entity financial reporting standards, and the confirmed outcome may differ from the number published on August 20.

How will the deficit affect the Super Smash competition?

The combination of the FY26 shortfall and the departure of Dream11 as Super Smash title sponsor led NZC to scale back the competition's broadcast footprint for what it described as the final season of the current format. After consulting both the Major Associations and the New Zealand Cricket Players Association, NZC confirmed that 24 of the 64 scheduled Super Smash matches will be televised, spread across 12 double-header days that include the finals, within the December-January window.

With the TVNZ broadcast rights agreement having concluded at the end of last season, NZC is in active discussions to keep all 24 televised matches available on free-to-air channels in New Zealand. The complete Super Smash fixture list is due to be published next month.

"The loss of Super Smash title sponsor Dream11, coupled with the FY26 budget deficit, meant this was the most financially responsible decision for the competition. Our support and commitment to the community game, as well as the players and fans, remains a key priority and we're confident that we are taking a considered and responsible approach in the circumstances. Further, our entire organisation is focused on delivering an unforgettable India men's tour to start the summer and ensuring we maximise the incredible opportunity it presents," said Allott.

What is NZC's financial outlook for the year ahead?

Despite the FY26 result, NZC has reassessed its forward budgets and expects a materially stronger position in the coming financial year. Net projections point to a surplus exceeding $10m, with the bulk of that improvement tied to broadcast and commercial revenue generated by the India men's inbound tour.

"Thankfully, the coming financial year is set to be more prosperous, with net projections forecasting a surplus in excess of $10m, driven largely by the broadcast and commercial revenue generated by the in-bound tour by India. That being said, we are acutely aware that as a business our financial model over a four-year cycle is typically lumpy, so we need to be prudent to ensure the long-term sustainability of cricket," said Allott.

NZC's revenue pattern across a four-year international cycle creates natural peaks and troughs, and the organisation has stated that prudent management of those swings is central to sustaining the game at all levels in New Zealand.
