Yankees trade reliever to Pirates before deadline

The New York Yankees made another move ahead of Monday’s MLB trade deadline, sending right-handed reliever Camilo Doval to the Pittsburgh Pirates in a deal aimed at reshaping both clubs’ rosters.

The transaction comes with the Pirates still in the National League wild-card race and the Yankees continuing to adjust one of baseball’s deepest bullpens.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan first reported the trade on X, formerly Twitter, confirming that the Yankees and Pirates had agreed to the deal Saturday afternoon.

“Trade news: The Pittsburgh Pirates are acquiring right-handed reliever Camilo Doval from the New York Yankees for two prospects, sources tell ESPN.”

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand subsequently took to the platform, confirming the complete trade package. According to Feinsand, the Yankees are sending Doval and cash considerations to the Pirates in exchange for catcher Omar Alfonzo and outfielder Luis Cruz, while crediting Passan for first reporting the deal.

The trade arrives two days before the MLB trade deadline on Monday, August 3, giving both organizations time to make additional moves if needed.

Doval, 29, joined the Yankees at the 2025 trade deadline after beginning his career with the San Francisco Giants. The former 2023 National League All-Star appeared in 44 games for New York this season, posting a 4.54 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP and 39 strikeouts across 39.2 innings. Although he continued to feature elite velocity, inconsistent results led to a reduced role in the bullpen.

For the Yankees, the move adds prospect depth and opens up 40-man roster flexibility. Alfonzo ranked as Pittsburgh’s No. 17 prospect, while Cruz adds outfield depth.

The acquisition gives the Pirates another experienced late-inning arm as it pushes for a National League wild-card spot. As of Saturday, the trade stood among the Yankees’ most notable moves ahead of Monday’s deadline.
