Falcons, Matthew Bergeron agree to $96 million contract extension

The Atlanta Falcons on Saturday signed left guard Matthew Bergeron to a four-year contract extension, keeping the offensive lineman under contract with the team through the 2030 season. The deal is reportedly worth $96 million and includes $60 million in guaranteed money, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Bergeron was originally scheduled to become a free agent after the 2026 season. The reported $24 million average annual value places Bergeron among the highest-paid offensive linemen in the NFL on a yearly basis.

Atlanta selected Bergeron with the 38th overall pick in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The Syracuse product immediately became the Falcons starting left guard and has remained in that role throughout his NFL career. Since entering the league, Bergeron has started 49 games for Atlanta, missing only two starts during his first three seasons.

Bergeron, a native of Victoriaville, Quebec, Canada, played tackle during his college career before transitioning to guard in the NFL. He started at right tackle for Syracuse in 2019 before becoming the team’s left tackle starter for three seasons. After joining the Falcons, he developed into a consistent interior offensive lineman and became an essential part of Atlanta’s offensive line.

The 26-year-old guard has been ranked among the league’s best interior blockers in recent seasons. Pro Football Focus placed Bergeron 20th among qualified guards last season.

The agreement is the latest example of the Falcons prioritizing long-term stability with their young offensive players. Bergeron becomes the third player to receive a major extension from Atlanta in the past two months, joining wide receiver Drake London and tight end Kyle Pitts Sr.

With Bergeron’s new deal, the Falcons now have both starting guards under contract, as Chris Lindstrom remains with the team as the right guard. Bergeron and Lindstrom have provided stability on the interior of the offensive line for Atlanta, alongside veteran left tackle Jake Matthews.

The Falcons are still working toward a possible extension for running back Bijan Robinson. Robinson has been holding in during training camp while discussions continue on a new contract.
