Steelers agree to contract with ex-Browns safety

On Saturday, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed veteran safety Rayshawn Jenkins to a one-year contract, adding an experienced option to their secondary heading into the second week of training camp after he impressed the team in a workout. The move bolsters a safety group short on proven backups.

Jenkins, 32, enters his 10th NFL season after spending 2025 with the Cleveland Browns. He appeared in all 17 games last season, making three starts while recording 45 total tackles and one interception. He also contributed on both defense and special teams, logging more than 200 snaps in each phase.

Originally selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Jenkins has played for the Chargers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Seattle Seahawks and Browns. Across his NFL career, he has appeared in 139 games, amassing 11 interceptions for 148 return yards and one touchdown. He has also notched 34 pass breakups and started 92 games during his nine completed seasons.

The most productive stretch of Jenkins’ career came with the Jaguars in 2022 and 2023. During those two seasons, he finished with consecutive 100-tackle campaigns while adding 10 tackles for loss, five interceptions and 19 passes defensed. His combination of production and experience made him an attractive addition for Pittsburgh as it sought to upgrade its secondary.

The Steelers had worked out both Jenkins and Jordan Whitehead before deciding to move forward with Jenkins. He is expected to provide depth behind DeShon Elliott, Jaquan Brisker and veteran backup Darnell Savage while also bringing leadership to Patrick Graham’s defense in the coordinator’s first season with the team.

Pittsburgh’s safety depth had been a major discussion point early in training camp, even as young defensive backs such as Jack Henderson, Daylen Everette, Tamon Lynum and Darly Porter Jr. showed encouraging performances. Jenkins’ arrival gives the Steelers another experienced option, though it could reduce opportunities for younger players competing for snaps.
