Brewers rumors: The veteran catcher who may be on trade block after Bo Naylor addition

The Milwaukee Brewers generated immediate trade speculation Saturday by acquiring catcher Bo Naylor and right-hander Codi Heuer from the Cleveland Guardians. The four-player deal strengthened the Brewers’ organizational depth and raised questions about whether veteran catcher Gary Sanchez could be traded before Monday’s 6 p.m. ET MLB trade deadline.

The Brewers sent outfielder Blake Perkins and right-handed reliever Craig Yoho to the Guardians. Naylor and Heuer will report to Triple-A Nashville, meaning the transaction does not immediately alter Milwaukee’s major league roster.

William Contreras remains Milwaukee’s everyday catcher, while Sanchez has provided right-handed power in a reserve role. The 33-year-old is batting .214 with 33 hits, eight home runs, 26 RBIs, and 28 runs scored in 59 games this season. That production could appeal to contenders seeking an affordable veteran bat with experience behind the plate.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale addressed Sanchez’s status on X, formerly Twitter, after the trade became official Saturday morning.

“The deal is now official, and Brewers veteran catcher Gary Sanchez could be on the block.”

Naylor gives the Brewers a younger, left-handed catching option behind Contreras. However, he is batting .143 with 12 hits, two home runs, seven RBIs, and four runs scored in 28 games this season. His arrival does not guarantee an immediate promotion or independently force the veteran catcher off the roster.

Still, the added catching depth gives the Brewers more flexibility during the deadline’s final two days. Sanchez signed a one-year, $1.75 million contract with a mutual option for 2027, making him a relatively inexpensive target for clubs seeking power and catching depth.

The Brewers could retain Sanchez for the stretch run, but Naylor’s addition gives the front office another option as it evaluates potential moves before Monday evening.
