Reds rumors: Insider leaves door open for Hunter Greene trade before deadline

The Cincinnati Reds remain central to trade speculation as Monday’s MLB trade deadline draws closer, with Hunter Greene’s future representing their most consequential decision. Although conflicting reports have surrounded his availability, the possibility of a deal has not disappeared.

The 26-year-old righty started Friday vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates and allowed four earned runs on seven hits over six innings. The outing left him with a 2-2 record and 6.83 ERA through 27 2/3 innings this season. Despite his uneven results since returning, Greene’s velocity, previous success, and team-friendly contract continue to attract interest.

It was reported on Friday that the Reds informed teams Greene was no longer available. However, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand provided a subsequent update on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday morning that strongly suggested otherwise.

“The Reds are still listening to teams calling about Hunter Greene, per sources. Odds of Greene being moved by Monday remain ’50-50.'”

The conflicting reports leave the team balancing immediate rotation stability against the opportunity to secure a transformative return for its long-term future. This uncertainty gives the Reds margin for error as it weighs present competitiveness against the long-term value of a blockbuster return.

Any trade would require a substantial return because Cincinnati controls Greene through 2028. His contract also includes a $21 million club option for 2029, giving interested teams several seasons of potential value. A serious offer would likely need to include multiple premium prospects, potentially including talent close to reaching the major leagues.

The flamethrowing right-hander underwent arthroscopic elbow surgery in March and missed approximately three months. Since returning, he has mixed encouraging stretches with inconsistent results. However, his limited 2026 sample does not erase the 2.75 ERA he posted in 2024 or his 2.76 mark last season.

Cincinnati could decide to keep Greene alongside Chase Burns as the foundation of its future rotation altogether. Trading him, however, could accelerate the organization’s retooling by producing a significant prospect return.

The Reds have no obligation to move Greene before Monday, August 3, at 6 p.m. ET. Still, Feinsand’s report confirms the front office has not completely closed the door.
