Lucas Herrington in line to become most expensive Australian ever in Premier League move

Premier League newcomers Hull are poised to sign Australia World Cup star Lucas Herrington.

The 18-year-old centre-back, currently playing his club football for MLS side Colorado Rapids, was one of the breakout stars of this summer’s World Cup.

talkSPORT understands Hull are in advanced talks about a deal to bring Herrington to the Premier League.

The Tigers are ready to pay more than £20million, which would be a record for an Australian player, and Herrington is keen to join.

Harry Souttar previously held the record from his £14.5m move from Stoke to Leicester.

Herrington’s Socceroos defensive teammate Harry Souttar currently holds that record after joining Leicester from Stoke for a reported 26m Australian dollars (£15m) in 2023.

Born in Brisbane, Herrington came through the ranks at local A-League club Brisbane Roar.

Last summer, he agreed a deal to join Colorado Rapids ahead of the 2026 MLS season, making his MLS debut in February.

But, helped by his impressive showings in Australia’s run to the World Cup last 32, he appears set to make the biggest move of his career yet.

Herrington has earned six caps for his country since making his senior debut in March.

He previously starred in Australia’s 2025 AFC U-20 Asian Cup triumph.

Herrington became the Socceroos’ youngest-ever World Cup starter in their final group game against Paraguay.

“I can’t really describe it,” he said after that game. It means everything to me to represent the Socceroos at a World Cup.

“I’ve been dreaming of it since I was a kid, and to be able to do that today, it’s so, so special.”

Herrington also featured in the last-32 defeat to Egypt, agonisingly missing a penalty in the shootout, drawing praise from Zlatan Ibrahimovic for ‘showing a lot of courage’ to step up to the spot.

Hull are preparing for their first Premier League campaign in almost a decade after returning to the top flight as last season’s Championship play-off winners.

Sergej Jakirovic’s men have made four signings so far this summer as they aim to secure survival.

Former England goalkeeper Jack Butland and Ecuadorian midfielder Oscar Zambrano have arrived from Rangers and Maribor respectively, with left-back Matt Targett and Japan midfielder Hidemasa Morita heading to the MKM Stadium on free transfers.

Hull kick off the 2026/27 campaign at home to Manchester United on August 22.
