England v Pakistan Test series: Match dates, locations, squads and how to follow

England return to Test action in August as they take on Pakistan in a three-match series, and a new era beckons.

Plenty has changed since England were last in red ball action, with Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes both since being replaced as head coach and captain.

McCullum was sacked earlier in July after seven defeats in nine Tests, culminating in a disastrous 2-1 series loss to New Zealand in June.

Meanwhile, Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket midway through the same series, just weeks after he was involved in a nightclub incident alongside Gus Atkinson.

Replacing the pair are former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as head coach, with Joe Root confirmed as captain again.

But fans won’t be able to get an immediate taste of England under Fleming, who won’t start his role until after the Pakistan Test.

Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim head coach for the upcoming series, as his side look to bounce back from the disappointment of the Ashes and their New Zealand defeat with a statement win.

England vs Pakistan: Matches and locations

This three-Test series will take place between August 19 and September 13.

The first Test will be held at Headingley in Leeds, and will take place between Wednesday, August 19 and Sunday, August 23.

After that, the action then moves to Lord’s for the second Test, which runs between Thursday, August 27 and Monday, August 31.

To complete the series, the third and final Test will be held at Edgbaston in Birmingham, starting on Wednesday, September 9 and coming to an end on Sunday, September 13.

Play will start at 11am UK time each day throughout the series.

England vs Pakistan: Squads

Following the news that he will take interim charge of England for the upcoming series, Marcus Trescothick is yet to name his squad to face Pakistan.

One man who won’t be featuring is Ben Stokes, after he called time on his glittering international career during the New Zealand Test.

With Stokes having taken over from Root as Test captain four years ago, there will be a sense of deja vu to the Pakistan series, as the Yorkshireman begins his second spell after holding the role between 2017 and 2022.

Meanwhile, Pakistan announced their 17-player squad for the Test series earlier this month, with Babar Azam set to captain the side.

And the Shaheens will be mixing youth and experience, with four uncapped players named in their travelling party.

Left-arm spinner Ali Usman, right-handed batter Muhammad Awais Zafar, right-arm fast bowler Ubaid Shah and wicket-keeper batter Muhammad Ghazi Ghori are all looking to make their Test debuts.

England vs Pakistan: What has been said?

Following his appointment as England Test captain for the second time, Joe Root shared his delight at resuming the role.

Root said: “It is a great honour and privilege to be asked to be England Men’s Test captain again.

“The Test captaincy is a difficult but hugely rewarding job and, after enjoying a brief taste of it again working with Baz McCullum last month, I am excited to lead this next generation of players forward.

“The opportunity to do that alongside Stephen is also a huge motivator.

“He has proved over a long period of time that he is an exceptional leader with a great knowledge of the game, and I am looking forward to working with him and helping to build a winning environment.”
