Anthony Joshua’s ex-trainer explains why he rejected offer of role in Netflix show about star’s career

Robert Garcia has suggested he turned down interest in a role in former charge Anthony Joshua’s Netflix documentary.

Joshua is one of boxing’s biggest superstars, with his rise from Olympic champion to a two-time heavyweight world champion one of the sport’s incredible stories.

Netflix are now heavily involved in Joshua’s career, with his upcoming showdown with Tyson Fury expected to land on the streaming service.

His bitter rival Fury has had several documentaries made about him and his boxing career, including with his family series ‘At Home with the Furys.’

And now AJ will receive the same treatment with a documentary set to be released about his career in the squared circle.

Former trainer Garcia, who coached Joshua for his rematch defeat to Oleksandr Usyk, was asked to speak on the biopic.

But he has cryptically suggested he didn’t want to ‘lie’ when asked why he turned down the opportunity.

He explained to Boxing Scene: “They wanted to fly me to London so I could sit down for a couple of days and talk to them about the months that I spent with him.

“They actually told me they would fly down to California. I denied it because I don’t want to be part of this, because I’m not gonna lie either.

“I’m not gonna lie to nobody. I’d rather stay quiet because at the end, honestly, we were cheering for him to win because we want to see him against Fury. And that’s the fight that’s happening.”

Garcia and Joshua didn’t end on the best of terms, with comments the trainer made criticising the Briton reportedly mistranslated.

He has since been through multiple training set-ups including Ben Davison and now team Usyk.

Joshua mad a successful comeback to boxing with a well-earned victory over Kristian Prenga after an early scare.

Next is now the long-awaited clash with Fury, which has been signed, but is yet to receive a date and venue.

Neither fighter looks at the peak of their powers, but there is still a feud that needs settling.

And Garcia wants and believes Joshua can win the clash.

On his potential clash with the ‘Gypsy King, he added: “He’s also a great person, I don’t wish him bad.

“I would love to see him win. I lived with him for four months, and as a person, he’s a great person.
