Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler has a fan in Bruins legend he is named after

The New York Yankees have a new star on the mound. Cam Schlittler has been great for the team this year, going 7-3 on the year with a 1.89 ERA. Schlittler has spoken about how it is difficult to pitch for the Yankees.

Outside of the pressure of pitching for the Yankees, it may be difficult to pitch in New York after growing up in the Boston area. Schlittler is from Walpole, Massachusetts, and his parents raised him in the suburb of Boston. They also named him after a Boston legend, according to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic.

Schlittler, who was born in 2001, was named for Cam Neely, who played for the Boston Bruins from the 1987-87 season through 1995-96.

“We were middle-class, blue-collar working people and he kind of epitomized that label,” Cam’s father, John Schlittler, said about Cam Neely. “He went out every day. He played hurt. He played hard. “It was kind of a joke at first. We loved him, obviously, as a player. And it was like, ‘Well, you should name your kid after him.’ Stuff like that. I always stayed a fan. I think when Cam was born, it was a name that I liked anyways. It got legs from there. That’s where it started. My wife liked the name. I guess that’s all that mattered.”

Neely was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2005 and is now the President of the Bruins. He is also a fan of the young pitcher.

“I’m going to be following with interest his career,” Neely said. He also called it “humbling” that a person would name a kid after him.

Now, if Schlittler can have the same career as Neely, both players and the Yankees will be ecstatic. Schlittler will get a chance to pitch against the Boston Red Sox this upcoming weekend, as he is slated to start the final game of the three-game set on Sunday.
