Yankees’ Gerrit Cole gets brutally honest on Hudson Valley rehab start

The New York Yankees have gotten off to a 16-9 start, leading the AL East. While they have been hot, the Yankees have waited for Gerrit Cole’s return, as he recovers from Tommy John Surgery. Cole recently had a Hudson Valley rehab start and got honest about his performance, according to the YES Network.

It was the second rehab start for the All-Star pitcher. After Cole made his first rehab start last week, he has slowly worked his way back up. Currently, there has been no concrete timeline for when he will return. Because of their great start, the Yankees are not rushing Cole as he continues to gain strength and be able to go longer in games.

Cole missed the entire 2025 season after sustaining his injury in the 2024 World Series. Ultimately, he spent the season recovering. Before his injury, Cole went 8-5 with a 3.41 ERA over 17 starts in 2024. Additionally, he went 1-0 with a 2.17 ERA in the postseason. Cole is looking to regain his elite form and has been gradually making progress toward returning to the ace he was before the injury.

Cole’s return would be a boon for a Yankees rotation that is already the best in the MLB. If he can truly regain form, he could help the Yankees become instant contenders, and it would be a great bounce-back after falling to the Toronto Blue Jays in the Divisional Round last season. For now, the team will be cautious with his recovery. Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, Ryan Weathers, and Luis Gil are holding the fort until Cole returns.
