Mike Elko drops brilliant coaching knowledge you have to hear

Texas A&M football head coach Mike Elko drew quite the attention with a eligibility take before the season. But Sunday’s presser saw an honest coaching take. One that will draw ears in after the Aggies defeated Missouri State 50-0.

Elko believed the Aggies had already won against the Bears. But not in a cocky way as Elko eloquently described to reporters.

“We won that game six months ago with what we did in the winter. We didn’t win that game with what I said at halftime,” Elko described. “So we built a culture, a character, a commitment to doing things of how we want to do them back in January. That’s what came out in the second half. It’s not I came in and riled them up. That’s not how this works.”

Then, Elko verbally illustrated what his real job is as head coach.

“My job is to be calm and collective when they’re frantic. [Plus] my job is to be create intensity when they’re not intense. My job is to always be opposite of the moment,” Elko added. “It’s not about the moment taking me away.”

The SEC power struggled early against the Bears, taking an underwhelming 19-0 lead into halftime. Fans who filled Kyle Field even became tense and frustrated over the product on display. But the Aggies blew the game open from there, combining to score 31 points in the second half to blow out the Conference USA member.

Now Elko, quarterback Marcel Reed, and the rest of the No. 8 ranked Aggies face a more stout challenge next in Arizona State at College Station.
