Yankees’ Austin Wells reaches brutal low not seen since 1976
New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells is in a slump. There’s no doubt about it. The 26-year-old’s OPS now sits at just .150, which, according to Talkin’ Yanks, is the worst mark by a Yankees player with at least 175 plate appearances since Jim Mason recorded a .445 OPS in 1976.
Additionally, Wells is hitting just .160. According to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, only four times has a player recorded a .160 batting average or worse in a season with at least 185 plate appearances.
Austin Wells is currently batting .160 on the season.
Among every Yankee who has had at least 185 plate appearances in a season, only four times has a player finished with a .160 BA or worse.

It is worth mentioning that Wells missed time while on the injured list earlier this season. Sometimes finding your rhythm at the plate can prove to be a challenge after returning from the IL. Nevertheless, Wells’ struggles are undeniable. One has to wonder if the Yankees will consider trading for a catcher before the deadline.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone is not giving up on Wells, however.
“I feel like he’s moving the needle right now, believe it or not,” Boone said of Wells, via Talkin’ Yanks. “Had a really good at-bat off the bench last night… Had the base hit the night before. He was really struggling there for a while. I feel like he’s gaining a little bit of traction. I know the results haven’t necessarily been there yet… I just think his move is better.”
The Yankees are hopeful that Wells will get back on track sooner rather than later. They could certainly use more offense from him given the fact that Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton are both out with injuries at the moment.
