Why you should buy Christian McCaffrey in fantasy football after monster 2025 season
Christian McCaffrey is a superstar everyone suddenly thinks is declining. That makes him very intriguing in 2026. The San Francisco 49ers running back enters fantasy football draft season carrying all the usual warning signs attached to a veteran at his position: age, mileage and a long injury history. Yet those concerns become considerably harder to defend when placed against what McCaffrey actually accomplished in 2025. He was not merely productive last season. CMC was the overall RB1 in PPR formats and finished the season as one of the most valuable players in fantasy football. The market may be preparing to discount McCaffrey because of his age, but that is precisely why savvy managers should be interested.
Elite versatility

McCaffrey’s career began in 2017, when the Carolina Panthers selected him in the second round. He immediately showcased the rare versatility that made him such a coveted prospect. McCaffrey finished his rookie season with 435 rushing yards and 651 receiving yards while scoring seven total touchdowns.
By 2018, the blueprint was obvious. McCaffrey became a true offensive centerpiece. One year later, he produced one of the greatest individual seasons in modern NFL history. He surpassed 1,000 yards both rushing and receiving while finishing with 2,392 scrimmage yards and 19 total touchdowns.
Injuries interrupted the next stage of his career. However, his move to San Francisco in 2022 reignited the superstar trajectory. He followed that midseason trade with a spectacular 2023 campaign. He rushed for 1,459 yards and 14 touchdowns while adding 67 receptions, 564 receiving yards and seven receiving scores.
Monster 2025
Then came 2025. McCaffrey reminded everyone that when he is healthy, there is still no player quite like him. The strongest argument for buying McCaffrey is mathematics. His 2025 campaign was a masterpiece. McCaffrey played all 17 regular-season games. He led the league with 413 total touches. He also carried 311 times for 1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns while adding 102 receptions on 129 targets for 924 yards and seven receiving touchdowns. That gave him 2,126 scrimmage yards and 17 total touchdowns.
Think about that workload. McCaffrey essentially operated as both a starting running back and a high-volume slot receiver. That is what makes his fantasy football profile so difficult to replicate. The receiving production alone would be exceptional for a running back. McCaffrey’s 102 catches also ranked among the most productive receiving seasons ever by a player at the position.
Age argument
There is no reason to pretend McCaffrey’s age and workload are irrelevant. Of course they matter. Running backs have shorter statistical primes than most other positions. McCaffrey has already accumulated significant mileage throughout his career. The 2024 season was particularly frustrating, as injuries limited him to four games.
That said, fantasy football is not a career-award competition. It is about projecting what a player will do next. McCaffrey just provided the strongest possible evidence that he remains capable of handling a massive workload. He did not limp through 2025 as a shell of his former self. He played every game, handled 311 carries and remained an elite receiving weapon.
That does not eliminate injury risk. It does, however, make it dangerous to assume that his decline has already begun. The better approach is to acknowledge the risk while recognizing that the upside remains enormous.
Runway wide open
McCaffrey’s fantasy football case is strengthened further by his environment in San Francisco. Kyle Shanahan’s offensive system consistently manufactures favorable rushing opportunities. More importantly, McCaffrey is trusted in virtually every situation.
The 2025 numbers demonstrate how aggressively San Francisco leaned into that advantage. McCaffrey’s 413 touches represented an enormous percentage of the 49ers’ offensive workload. At the same time, his 129 targets established him as a central component of the passing game.
That is precisely what fantasy managers want — volume from multiple avenues.
2026 projection
The supplied 2026 consensus projection is deliberately more conservative than McCaffrey’s 2025 production. He is forecasted to record approximately 269 carries for 1,094 rushing yards and nearly nine rushing touchdowns. That’s alongside 78 receptions for 694 receiving yards and close to five receiving scores.
Even with that significant statistical regression, the projection still lands around 334.8 PPR fantasy football points. That illustrates why fading McCaffrey solely because of his age can be a mistake.
As long as he remains healthy enough to stay on the field and continues receiving a substantial share of San Francisco’s offensive touches, his floor remains among the highest in fantasy football.
Buy the player, not the narrative

This is ultimately where fantasy football managers need to separate analysis from perception. The narrative says McCaffrey is aging, but his numbers say he just led fantasy running backs after playing all 17 games.
Sure, there is legitimate risk here. Nobody should draft McCaffrey as though injuries are impossible. Still, fantasy football is about balancing risk against reward. At a consensus RB3-to-RB4 range, McCaffrey offers precisely the type of upside worth pursuing in the first round. If the draft market allows him to slide because managers are frightened by his age, that is not necessarily a warning sign. It could be an opportunity.
