WWE star Sami Zayn out of action with a legitimate injury

For the past few months, former champion Sami Zayn has established himself as one of the regular faces on WWE television. From winning the WWE Undisputed Championship at Crown Jewel to losing it nine days later, Zayn has continued his run as a popular name.

However, a new report has emerged which shed doubt on Zayn’s current in-ring run. Fans recently heard Zayn reference an injury during his recent exchange with CM Punk on Friday Night SmackDown; the reason behind it has now become clear.

According to PWInsider, the broken hand injury that Zayn mentioned during his exchange is a legitimate injury and not WWE kayfabe. Punk was told by Zayn that he would have gone after him if his hand wasn’t broken. Although there was initial uncertainty, the report confirms the injury is genuine, which accounts for his absence from WWE matches.

Zayn has not wrestled since losing the Fatal Four-Way match at WWE SummerSlam, which saw the return of Kevin Owens. Despite being sidelined from in-ring action, Zayn has continued appearing on television and taken part in his feud with CM Punk as well as the backstage segments with Johnny Gargano. As of now, apart from the injury report, there are no confirmed updates regarding Zayn’s in-ring comeback or next WWE match.

CM Punk is currently scheduled to defend his Undisputed WWE World Title against Kevin Owens on the upcoming episode of this week’s SmackDown in Toronto, Canada. Owens earned himself the title match after winning at WWE SummerSlam 2026.
