God of War series officially casts Dave Bautista as Ryan Hurst replacement

Earlier this month, just days after the announcement of Ryan Hurst’s injury and exit from the live-action God of War show, a new name emerged as the likely replacement. Former WWE Superstar and Hollywood sensation Dave Bautista was reported as a potential contender for the Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television series’ role.

Earlier reports noted that the popular PlayStation video game was being adapted, and Dave Bautista was in talks to star as Kratos. Now, according to Deadline, Bautista has taken over Hurst as the new Kratos. The Dune and Guardians of the Galaxy actor is set to lead the Amazon Prime Video TV series based on the video game franchise.

Ryan Hurst required surgery and a prolonged recovery period due to a biceps injury he sustained while performing a stunt in late June 2026. Initially cast as Kratos, the injury ruled Hurst out as the Greek god. God of War paused production immediately following the incident.

A couple of weeks later, the recast decision was finalized, and Bautista emerged as the final choice. Prep was expected to begin in mid-Aug for a mid-Oct. 2026 production start in Vancouver, Canada.

Filming for Amazon Prime’s God of War began in Vancouver in Feb. 2026 and is being created by Ronald D. Moore. The show was green-lit for two seasons, which are scheduled to be filmed back-to-back, and as of now, this plan has not changed. The upcoming live-action God of War series will pick up the stories of the recent two God of War PlayStation games, which are set in Nordic Mythology. While Bautista plays Kratos, Callum Vinson will take on the role of Atreus.
