Wizards’ AJ Dybantsa honors dad, gets sister’s immediate reaction to No. 1 pick

AJ Dybantsa fulfilled a childhood dream after being selected as the No. 1 pick by the Washington Wizards in the NBA Draft at Barclays Center in New York on Tuesday.

Dybantsa was widely projected to be the first prospect called on stage, and that was exactly what happened, as the Wizards added another talented upstart to their young core. He is the first No. 1 pick of Washington since John Wall in 2010.

The 19-year-old forward has always credited his family for building a support system around him. On draft night, he requested to be announced by his formal name, which he shares with his father, Anicet Dybantsa Sr.

“Everything I do is for him,” said the former BYU standout in an interview with ESPN.

His oldest sister, Samarra Dybantsa, was thrilled to see her little brother reach his goals.

“It’s so crazy. When we were younger, you just saw him in the backyard, playing basketball, and now, he’s the No. 1 pick in the NBA. He’s come so far,” said Samarra.

Dybantsa led the nation in scoring with 25.5 points in his one-and-done stint at BYU. He added 6.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.1 steals.

He is expected to make an immediate impact on the Wizards, teaming up with Trae Young, Anthony Davis, Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly, Kyshawn George, and Bub Carrington.

More details to come.
