Will star prospect Walker Jenkins save Twins’ playoff hopes?

The Minnesota Twins are set to promote top prospect Walker Jenkins for their game on Friday night against the Chicago White Sox, per Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com. Not only is Jenkins the Twins’ top prospect, but he is the No. 15 overall prospect in the sport, according to MLB.com. The Twins believe he can become a star at the big league level.

Jenkins features five-tool potential. His offensive prowess is especially intriguing, as his ceiling suggests he could be a reliable power and contact hitter. The 21-year-old outfielder has hit .323/.417/.559 across 73 total minor league games this season, 69 of which have come at the Triple-A level. He has 14 home runs and 17 stolen bases as well.

The Twins are dealing with injuries and their chances of reaching the postseason are decreasing. The weak American League still has them sitting in a position to make a playoff push, however.

Minnesota holds a 64-70 overall record. The ball club is currently 6.5 games behind the first place Chicago White Sox in the American League Central standings. The Twins are 4.0 games back of the final AL Wild Card spot as well.

So, will Jenkins save their playoff hopes?

Sometimes promoting a top prospect gives a team the momentum it needs to get things going. Jenkins’ performance alone won’t save the Twins’ season, although it could obviously help if he performs well. If his MLB promotion fuels the rest of the roster, though, it would not be surprising to see Minnesota begin winning games on a more consistent basis.

Yes, there is a chance Walker Jenkins’ promotion could save the Twins’ season, but he cannot do it alone.
