Michigan basketball 5-star freshman suffers injury scare during exhibition game

The Michigan Wolverines, now under a new head coach Mike Boynton, are currently on a trip in Europe as part of their preparation for the 2026-27 college basketball season. However, Michigan basketball had a tough break during one of its exhibition games in Croatia, with freshman and five-star recruit Brandon McCoy Jr. going down with an injury.

McCoy had to be helped off the court after just 20 seconds of regulation time against a pro team, as he suffered what appeared to be a lower-body injury.

“Michigan five-star freshman Brandon McCoy Jr. was helped off the court after suffering an apparent lower-leg injury in today’s exhibition vs. Mega Superbet,” Alejandro Zúñiga of 247Sports reported via a social media post on X, formerly Twitter.

McCoy was trying to get to the basket along the baseline when he fell down to the ground. Michigan basketball trainer Chris Williams, strength and conditioning coach Matt Aldred and coach Mike Boynton checked on the freshman, who needed almost a minute before he could get back up and leave the court with help.

This is another concerning injury blow to the reigning national champions Wolverines. Cincinnati Bearcats transfer and center Moustapha Thiam previously suffered a lower-body injury during a game against Lithuania, and it also happened in the first quarter.

McCoy was a much-coveted prospect before Michigan basketball signed him. He had offers from the likes of Alabama Crimson Tide, Duke Blue Devils, San Diego State Aztecs, UCLA Bruins, Arizona State Sun Devils and California Golden Bears.

Hopefully for Michigan basketball, the 6-foot-4 point guard from Bellflower, California, did not suffer a serious injury
