Why Twins starter was scratched for White Sox game
The Minnesota Twins’ pitching staff has struggled some this year. While the team is seventh in quality starts, they are 21st in team ERA. The Twins recently got Taj Bradley back in the rotation, who was projected to improve the starting rotation.
Now, the rotation is having to make another change, as their starter for Thursday’s game against the White Sox has been scratched, per Scott Merkin of MLB.com.
“Simeon Woods-Richardson now starting for the Twins. Kendry Rojas is a scratch due to posterior elbow soreness,” Merkin posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Rojas had only made one start so far this year, coming on May 18 against the Houston Astros. He went four innings that game, giving up two hits and one walk. Overall, he has pitched 14.1 innings over five outings with a 1.26 ERA.
Meanwhile, Woods-Richardson had been a starter begin the year. He made nine starts for the Twins this year, going 0-6 with a 7.71 ERA. Since then, he has moved to the bullpen. Woods-Richardson has made two appearances in relief since moving to the bullpen. In those two appearances, he has pitched a total of three innings, giving up two hits and two walks, while striking out two batters. Overall, this year, Woods-Richardson is 0-6 with a 7.20 ERA and a 1.82 WHIP.
The Twins are 27-29 on the season, which places them in third place in the AL Central. They are five games behind the Cleveland Guardians in the division. The Twins finish a four-game series with the Chicago White Sox on Thursday afternoon.
