Why Trevon Diggs ‘reclamation project’ could help fix Commanders awful defense

The Washington Commanders are currently taking part in OTAs as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 NFL season. The Commanders are looking to bounce back after a rough 2025 campaign that saw them miss the playoffs altogether on the heels of 2024’s surprise run to the NFC Championship Game.

One of the many areas where Washington struggled last year was in the secondary, with the Marshon Lattimore trade with the New Orleans Saints proving to be a bust, among other things going wrong.

Recently, Matt Bowen of ESPN floated an interesting free agent still on the market that the Commanders could pursue to help shore up that unit: Trevon Diggs.

“Washington could view Diggs as a reclamation project, helping him get back to being a true playmaker in the secondary,” noted Bowen. “…Under new coordinator Daronte Jones, Diggs can use his man coverage traits and backfield vision to get a jump on the ball in the Commanders’ pressure-heavy scheme.”

Diggs was released by the Green Bay Packers after having spent a short stint there following his tenure with the Dallas Cowboys. The former Pro Bowler has been an interception machine at times, recording 20 so far during his career, but injury concerns have started to pile up over the last few seasons, as well as questions about how viable of a defender he is when he’s not intercepting the ball.

Still, it might be a risk worth taking for a Washington team that was searching for answers throughout much of last year on that side of the ball.

Meanwhile, the Commanders will be hoping for much better injury luck for Jayden Daniels and the offense as they look to get back to their electric 2024 heights.
