Why Travis Kelce’s Guardians ceremonial first pitch just got canceled

On Sunday, Cleveland Guardians fans were expecting to see Travis Kelce throw out the first pitch before their matchup against the Detroit Tigers. But now, there won’t even be any baseball being played.

The Sunday matchup has now been postponed due to rain, the team announced. Cleveland and Detroit will now play a double header on September 4.

It has not yet been revealed when Kelce will make his make-up pitch. It seems unlikely that Guardians will wait until September though with him still being an active member of the Kansas City Chiefs. The first pitch may not have happened on Sunday, but it seems likely Guardians fans will be able to see Kelce soon enough.

The reason he was throwing out the first pitch, outside of being a future Hall of Fame tight end, is the fact that Kelce is now a minority owner of the Guardians. He grew up in the area and was a lifelong fan. When given the opportunity, Kelce decided to follow in his quarterback’s footsteps – Patrick Mahomes is a minority owner of the Kansas City Royals – and purchase part of his childhood baseball team.

If Kelce makes it out to the ballpark sooner rather than later, he’ll see his Guardians atop the NL Central with their 39-33 record. If everything goes to plan in Cleveland, he’ll be able to attend Progressive Field at anytime and see that fact remain true.

But on Sunday at least, things did not go to plan. Their matchup against the Tigers and Kelce’s appearance will now come at a later date.
