Why Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards was ‘happy’ Victor Wembanyama got ejected

Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves were only two wins away from reaching the Western Conference Finals for a third straight year, but the San Antonio Spurs were just too much for them to handle. The superbly skilled 7-foot-4 Victor Wembanyama was especially impactful, as he thwarted the Wolves on both offense and defense. Edwards was beyond grateful when The Alien was ejected in Game 4 for elbowing Naz Reid in the neck and jaw area.

He only wished that the NBA took more action, because Minnesota would have had a much better chance of getting into a groove offensively sans Wembanyama. The superstar guard shared his thoughts on the controversial topic in an NSFW video.

“That n**** is like 8’5 when he spread out,” Edwards joked, via his YouTube channel. “The rim ain’t nothing but 10 feet! You got to put that b**** so high above the rim. He’s like a statue. It’s so hard to beat them when he’s on the floor just because of his defense. I was so happy that n**** got kicked out. I hope they suspend him {laughs}. Imma email their ass right now!”

Unfortunately for the Timberwolves, Edwards’ pleas were not answered and Wembanyama was permitted to play for the remainder of the series. The French unicorn totaled 27 points, 17 rebounds, five assists and three blocks in a pivotal 126-97 Game 5 victory. The Spurs wrapped up the conference semifinals with a blowout win in Target Center, launching Minnesota into the offseason.

Anthony Edwards was already operating below 100 percent after suffering knee injuries late in the regular season and during the playoffs, so a Wembanyama-less San Antonio frontcourt might have been the only way for him to consistently post monster numbers. Even so, he still made a big impact for his squad.

The two-time All-NBA Second-Team selection averaged 23.7 points while shooting 46.9 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from 3-point range against the Spurs. Imagine what he could have done if the Defensive Player of the Year was unavailable for the latter part of the series.

Edwards and the Wolves will just have to figure out how to solve the Victor Wembanyama Rubik’s Cube moving forward, because San Antonio should remain a cumbersome obstacle for the many postseasons to come.
