Why Red Sox accomplishing impressive feat for 1st time in 9 years isn’t saving season

The Boston Red Sox’s starters have been pitching well in recent action. In fact, they have made eight consecutive quality starts heading into Friday night’s game against the New York Yankees. According to Chris Cotillo of masslive.com, it is the longest such streak in nine years. The problem is that Boston has won only four games during that span.

The Red Sox were able to defeat the Yankees on Thursday, earning a 6-3 victory. Boston has remained inconsistent overall, however. The team is just 33-46 and they are in last place in the American League East standings.

The offense and the bullpen have been the issues over the past eight games. In some contests, Boston’s lineup simply has not been able to produce many runs. In other games, the ball club’s bullpen has struggled.

The Red Sox entered the season with lofty overall expectations, but the goals for the starting rotation were especially high. Not only did they have good depth, but the Red Sox added stars such as Ranger Suarez and Sonny Gray. The pitching certainly features the potential to make a legitimate impact, but the overall team needs more consistency.

At the moment, it looks like the Red Sox will sell before the trade deadline. They do not appear to be a contender. Could things change? Sure, Boston could turn things around in July. However, the fact that they went just 4-4 despite receiving eight consecutive quality starts suggests this team is nowhere close to performing at a playoff-caliber level.

The Red Sox will try to earn a big victory on Friday night against the Yankees at 7:10 PM EST in Boston.
