Why Rangers veteran outfielder requested his release
Texas Rangers outfielder Mark Canha has reportedly requested his release, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
“Veteran OF Mark Canha asked for his release today from the Rangers to seek big league opportunities elsewhere,” Heyman wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Canha signed a minor league contract with the Rangers this past offseason. Texas also signed Andrew McCutchen, however, who ultimately earned the final outfield roster spot. Canha has not played in a game with the Rangers this season.
Canha will be an interesting free agent. He wants to play in MLB, and it would not be surprising to see at least a few teams interested in him.
The 37-year-old can play outfield and first base. He is a right-handed bat, so teams could platoon him with a left-handed hitter.
Canha most recently appeared in the big leagues in 2025 with the Kansas City Royals. He played in only 46 games, however, hitting .212/.272/.265. Regardless, he is a veteran big league ball player with a proven track record.
As for the Rangers, Texas defeated the Athletics by a final score of 9-6 on Thursday. The Rangers and A’s are now tied for first place in the American League West division with 10-9 overall records. Texas is not playing the best baseball, but the ball club is finding ways to win nonetheless.
The Rangers’ next series will be played against the Mariners in Seattle. It will be a three-game series, beginning on Friday and ending on Sunday. Friday’s first pitch is scheduled for 9:40 PM EST.
