Why Kevon Looney is ready to ‘run through a wall’ for Luka Doncic
The Los Angeles Lakers were recently treated to a Slovenia getaway as part of a minicamp and team bonding activity planned by star wing Luka Doncic. The team is currently back stateside and preparing for the start of training camp in about one month, and for some, such as new Lakers big man Kevon Looney, the entire trip left such an impression that the team is ready to rally behind Luka Doncic this upcoming season, as per Grant Young of the New York Post.
“That just shows his character, shows that he really wants to win. He wants the people to know his background and why he is how he is. And I think he did a good job of that,” Looney said. “He’s a great player and a great leader. He likes to show what he can do on the court, and then we got to see his personality off the court. So it was great. We’re going to follow him and run through a wall for him.”
The Lakers officially entered the Luka Doncic era this offseason following the departure of LeBron James in free agency. He is in the midst of a three-year contract extension he signed with the Lakers last offseason. And in Kevon Looney, Doncic has a solid pick-and-roll partner and screen-setter on the court with him this Lakers season.
Looney signed with the team as a free agent after spending last year with the New Orleans Pelicans. He appeared in 21 games, including eight starts, at a little over 14 minutes per game. He averaged 2.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists with splits of 41.7 percent shooting from the field and 70 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
