Why Jason Kidd stunningly compares LeBron James’ game to his own

Hall of Fame point guard and former NBA star Jason Kidd never played on the same team with LeBron James despite their careers overlapping, but Kidd did get to coach the new Philadelphia 76ers star from 2019-2021 during the duo’s time with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Jason Kidd is generally considered one of the greatest point guards of all time, and while LeBron James is not a true point guard in that sense, he has often taken on the role of lead playmaker. James has made the comparison between him and Kidd before, and Kidd also believes the 76ers’ star is the closest to him in terms of overall game.

“I have talked about the Joker, but since you brought LeBron up, I would say LeBron’s game is … my game is it closest to LeBron, even though his game is at a different altitude,” Kidd said during an appearance on the All-Star Magazine show. “He has the ability to make plays for his teammates. His IQ, understanding what is going to happen before it happens, is extremely high. Those are the two players when you talk about passing, and just their basketball IQ.”

When Kidd retired from the NBA following the 2012-13 season, he was third on the league’s all-time assists leaderboard behind only John Stockton and Chris Paul. But James is hot on his heels, currently at No. 4 on the list, and set to pass him this upcoming season. The 76ers star needs only 75 assists to move past Kidd into the No. 3 spot.

Depending on how many games James plays next season, he will get very close to Chris Paul as well. James is 536 assists away from reaching Paul. He finished last season with 432 assists in 60 games.
