Seahawks keep hunting for more cornerbacks with Chargers trade

The Seattle Seahawks have been tinkering with their cornerback room all offseason. As the 53-man roster deadline looms, the franchise has added another player to the mix.

The Seahawks acquired Avery Smith in a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers, via Tom Pelissero of the Ringer. In return, Seattle dealt a 2027 sixth-round pick.

Terrion Arnold was signed in free agency, as was Trevon Diggs. But Arnold won’t be eligible to play games until his legal situation is decided. And Diggs is no guarantee to make the team. To be fair, neither is Smith. But the fact the Seahawks were willing to give up draft compensation this close to the roster cutdown shows how highly they think of the cornerback.

Smith signed with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent in 2026. He came to the league after spending all four of his collegiate seasons with Toledo, appearing in 51 games. Overall, the cornerback made 127 tackles, 26 pass break ups and three interceptions. He was named Second-team All-MAC in both 2024 and 2025.

Smith got plenty of run with the Chargers throughout the preseason, looking to leave his mark. While he won’t be playing in Los Angeles, the cornerback certainly made an impression on Seattle. Now, assuming he makes the final roster, will be looking to make an impact as soon as possible.

While the Seahawks are coming off of a Super Bowl title, they knew their franchise wasn’t perfect. Secondary help was identified as a key need. While Smith won’t turn the unit into world beaters on his own, he gives Seattle an interesting rookie to work with at cornerback.
