Former Packers, Chiefs WR hits free agency after Cowboys release

The Dallas Cowboys have Super Bowl aspirations for the 2026 NFL season. Dallas is making some roster cuts on Sunday, as they look to build that championship-caliber squad. Dallas is parting ways with veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, per ESPN.

Valdes-Scantling is a journeyman of the NFL. He has already played with the Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers, Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers.

Even though the wideout signed a one-year contract with Dallas in April, it appears there just wasn’t a spot for him on the Week 1 roster.

“Dallas, though, is loaded at the position with CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens and Ryan Flournoy as the starters and hard decisions to make behind them among KaVontae Turpin, Camden Brown and Jonathan Mingo,” NBC Sports reported.

In his long NFL career, Valdes-Scantling has posted 3,686 career receiving yards. He has caught 21 touchdown passes. During the 2025 season, he finished the campaign with one touchdown catch.

“He appeared in five games each for San Francisco and Pittsburgh, catching four passes for 40 yards for the 49ers and 10 catches for 80 yards with a score for the Steelers,” NBC Sports added.

Valdes-Scantling also has 219 career receptions. He was selected in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. His best NFL season came in 2020 with the Packers. That year, he posted a career-high 690 receiving yards with six touchdown catches.

Dallas is making quite a few cuts to the roster on Sunday. Running back Jaydon Blue is also getting cut from the team, ESPN reported.

The Cowboys had a tough 2025 season. Dallas missed the NFL Playoffs, after finishing the year with a 7-9-1 record. Time will tell if this squad can make it back to the postseason in 2026.
