Why Gilbert Arenas tells AJ Dybantsa he wants Anthony Davis, Trae Young traded if he’s Wizards’ No. 1 pick

The Washington Wizards look poised to select BYU standout AJ Dybantsa with the number one pick they were recently awarded in the upcoming NBA Draft. Dybantsas figures to slide into the Wizards’ small forward slot and help fill out the roster around last year’s trade acquisitions, Trae Young and Anthony Davis.

However, recently, former NBA guard Gilbert Arenas detailed why he wouldn’t want to play alongside the two former All-Stars if he were Dybantsa.

“The reason I say that is you are the number one pick and you have the personality. You are a star and since you are the star, I need you to take over instantly. So I don’t need any other ex stars or anybody who wants to still be a star there. So I need full spotlight. I’m just saying I need full spotlight on you,” said Arenas, per NBA Courtside on X, formerly Twitter, via Arenas’ account on X.

Clearly, Arenas didn’t watch much of the San Antonio Spurs this year, as rookie Dylan Harper benefited significantly from playing alongside veterans on the San Antonio roster, and is now making huge plays for the Spurs during their NBA Finals run.

Davis himself also served as a mentor figure for last year’s number one overall pick, Cooper Flagg of the Dallas Mavericks, who has spoken many times about the role that Davis and Kyrie Irving played to him as veteran presences in the locker room.

While Young and Davis might hamper Dybantsa’s ability to put up huge numbers in his first year, it’s unclear why Arenas views their presence as an all-out negative for a young player trying to learn the ropes in the NBA.
